Physiology or Medicine
As part of this years preparations for the 61th Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates you can suggest a question on the subject of physiology and medicine to be asked the Nobel laureates. Here in mine.
There is no Nobel Prize in Medicine. It is the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. My question is about the "or" in the above name of the prize.
Form the viewpoint of both how research is done and the way these disciplines are taught, is this "or" as in
- (1) New York State or U.S.
For instance, "For New York State or U.S. stroke statistics, visit ...", i.e. physiology is part of medicine. Or is it more as in
- (2) Europe or U.S.,
that is, Physiology and Medicine are two separate and rather distinct disciplines. Or is it as in
- (3) U.S. or Canada,
that is, still two separate and distinct disciplines but covering the main area of the continent North America (Mexico could be Biochemistry and the other seven countries are also easily found). And how do you see this "or" in the future with respect to research and teaching?
This is my question to the Nobel Laureates.* Of course, I also would like to hear your answer in the comments and discuss this matter with you.
Note
*I rephrased the question here in minor details. By the way, you can vote on questions you would like to see answered. Popular questions will also be put to young scientists attending the Lindau meeting.

very good remark ;)
but
(1) nobel himself named it (wikipedia)
(2) medicine is about healing and treatment of diseases... this excludes all basic research that focuses on finding how things work just for the sake of knowledge
(3) physiology is about the function of all living systems (wiki)....so that i personally believe that physiology is not a (mathmatical) proper subset of medicine
(4) also by physiology most people won't really know what is meant but the prize is supposed to appeal to the public isn't it?
(5) naming it 'medicine and physiology' doesn't solve the issue either
conclusion: the term used is not quite correct but in lack of a better idea it serves all it's purposes ;)
Thanks Devi for you comment and answer. My post is really a question not a remark, at least I did not want to comment on this.
My question, however, is mainly about the viewpoint of how research is done and the way these disciplines are taught. In fact, I don't mind how the prize is called. But you have a good point there.
I will wait a little longer for more votes and sent a reply later.
